Whether you are looking to work on proper storage for your fruits and vegetables at home, or own a retail produce front, here are some important things to note:

Always store potatoes, garlic and onions in a cool, dry place with plenty of ventilation. This will prevent any early sprouting.

If your avocados are still solid and green, try placing them in a sealed paper bag. This will help them ripen quicker and become soft enough to use.

Leafy greens, such as lettuces, kale and chard, will stay fresh longer if rinsed, wrapped in a paper towel and stored in the fridge in a sealed container or bag.

If you purchase your tomatoes unripe, store them at room temperature away from the sun so that they can ripen evenly. Once they are ready to eat, put them in the fridge until you wish to use them.

If you find a moldy or spoiled berry in a container, remove it so that it does not spread to the rest of the berries.

Always put your produce in the fridge drawers so that the temperature and humidity will remain consistent.

Store your fruit separately from vegetables. Most fruits emit ethylene gas naturally which can cause vegetables to ripen quickly.

To keep asparagus fresher for longer, cut the bottom tips and place the stalks upright in a mason jar filled with a little water in the fridge.
